Andy Hueber’s career in homebuilding started long before he added “President” to his title. He began where many great builders do: as a laborer, learning firsthand what it takes to turn plans on paper into a custom home someone will proudly call their own.

Growing up in and around Hueber Homes had a significant influence on Andy, although he’ll readily admit there was a time when he thought his path might lead somewhere else. When his father, Hueber Homes founder John Hueber, gave him an opportunity to become more involved in the family business, Andy decided to give it a shot.

Within a short amount of time, I was hooked.

That decision set the course for a career spanning nearly every side of the homebuilding

business.

From the Field to the First Conversation

Over the years, Andy moved from laborer to residential supervisor and eventually into management, sales, site development and high-level design.

Today, as President of Hueber Homes, he is often the first point of contact for a client, helping take an idea from its earliest conversations to shovel ready. That means listening to what a homeowner wants to accomplish, understanding the property, identifying opportunities and potential challenges, and bringing together the right people to establish a clear path forward. That breadth of experience gives Andy a unique perspective. He understands the vision behind a custom home, but he also knows what it takes in the field to actually build it.

The Details Matter

Spend years supervising custom homes and certain things become difficult not to notice.

I always notice fit and finish.

Ask Andy which details he appreciates most and the list grows quickly: beautiful stone, stained woodwork, solid structure, good proportions, quality framing and thoughtfully designed systems.

This is a loaded question for me.

That attention to detail influences how Andy approaches a project from its earliest stages. Good design isn't simply about how a home looks. It's about thinking through how the structure, systems, spaces and details work together before construction begins.

For Andy, that's an important part of turning a homeowner's ideas into a plan that can be successfully executed in the field.

Custom Starts With Listening

For all the materials, plans and craftsmanship that go into a Hueber home, Andy says his favorite part of the company is much simpler: the people he gets to work with every day.

He believes the experience and passion of the Hueber Homes team and their willingness to collaborate, are fundamental to creating a successful project. It's also central to Andy's definition of custom.

Custom goes far beyond choosing finishes and fixtures. It means having the flexibility and bandwidth to dive into the details that matter most to each client. It means listening, problem-solving and being willing to adjust when there's a better way to accomplish what a homeowner is trying to achieve. Every client is different. Every property is different. And every project brings its own set of opportunities and challenges. Understanding those differences is where the process begins.

Plan the Work. Work the Plan

Thirty years in homebuilding has also taught Andy that even the best plan needs room for real life. Building a custom home requires coordinating subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, schedules, materials and, inevitably, weather. Andy believes navigating those variables successfully requires knowing how to approach different people and situations while keeping everyone moving toward the same goal.

Sometimes the saying ‘you make your own luck’ is true.

His philosophy is equally straightforward:

Plan the work. Work the plan. Be ready when Murphy’s Law rings true and don’t take it too personally. Or at least try not to.

Andy considers himself a follow-the-plan guy when there's a plan to follow, but he's equally comfortable adapting when circumstances require it. And he still brings a little field wisdom to the process:

I always measure twice and try not to cut off my fingers.

Trust the Process

After decades of watching homeowners experience both the excitement and occasional stress of building a custom home, Andy has learned that the process works best when there is trust between the homeowner and the team they've chosen.

Building custom involves hundreds of decisions, different perspectives and moments when things simply don't go according to plan. It's easy for the process to become overwhelming without patience, communication and confidence in the people helping guide it.

You hire a team to guide you, and you have to trust in their guidance.

That doesn't mean homeowners shouldn't be involved. Quite the opposite. Collaboration is an essential part of building something truly personal. But Andy believes trusting the experience around you allows the team and homeowner to work through decisions together and keep the bigger vision in focus.

That combination of craftsmanship, flexibility, collaboration and trust is ultimately what he believes defines the Hueber Homes experience.

When a House Becomes a Home

For someone who appreciates everything from framing and mechanical systems to stonework and proportions, Andy's most rewarding moments have surprisingly little to do with construction itself. It's seeing the smile on a client's face when they experience their completed home for the first time. And there's also one milestone that always stands out to him.

Once a home gets landscaped, it really feels alive for me.

It's the point when the plans, materials, craftsmanship and months of decisions finally come together as something more than a construction project. It becomes the place someone will actually live. And ultimately, that's what all the planning is for.

Beyond Hueber Homes

Outside of work, Andy's schedule doesn't slow down much. He and his wife have four kids, keeping family life in constant motion. When he does find some time of his own, he gravitates toward the outdoors—mountain biking, dirt biking, golfing, hiking and climbing. There's also the family farm, where Andy says plenty of his time is spent tackling another chore from John Hueber's seemingly endless list.

His dream project feels fitting for someone who spends his days imagining what's possible for other people's homes: a cabin in the mountains. His formula for a typical day is similarly uncomplicated—an early workout, coffee and a full schedule with enough variety to keep things interesting. And after 30 years in homebuilding, there's still one thing people might not expect to learn about the President of Hueber Homes:
